The EU has announced in the Chemicals Strategy for sustainability that it will lead by example, and, in line with international commitments, ensure that hazardous chemicals banned in the European Union are not produced for export, including by preparing new or amending relevant legislation if and as needed.
In line with the Chemicals Strategy, this initiative aims at reducing the environmental and health risks linked to exporting hazardous chemicals to third countries for those chemicals that cannot be placed on the market in the EU due to such risks.
The aim of this consultation is to get the views of and information from the stakeholders and the public that will help to prepare the necessary measures. The replies will be used to inform the evaluation of the Regulation on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure (the PIC Regulation), which regulates the export of chemicals that are severely restricted or banned in the EU, and the impact assessment that will be used by the Commission to prepare the action that will implement the commitment.
The public consultation is open since 8 May and will run until 31 July.
The European Commission adoption of the proposal is planned for the fourth quarter of 2023.
